PHARMACY TECHNICIAN:

Compounding Under the direct supervision of medical providers. Follows established policies and procedures to perform a variety of technical and clerical support tasks that are integral to the operation of the department.

Technician  prepares sterile and non-sterile compounded products according to production schedules and patient orders at the hospital; updates IV production list and makes all new mixes; inventories and orders IV admixture supplies; sets up and prepares all compounding orders; cleans and maintains work area and equipment; restocks drugs, diluents, syringes and needles; recycles and/or destroys returned IV’s and syringes; pulls syringes from freezer and dates and bags; processing medication returns and patient credits. Qualifications IV experience or experience in aseptic processing required Massachusetts

Pharmacy Technician license and PTCB National Certification required. High School diploma or equivalent required.  Ability to speak the English language, read, interpret and follow complicated verbal and written instruction with precision, accuracy and dependability. Effective interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail, math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, ratios/proportions) and ability to meet deadlines are all required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Aseptic transfers of sterile preparations under the direction of a pharmacist and in compliance with current regulations and standards • Demonstrates an understanding of USP 797 standards and of proper aseptic technique • Performs cleaning and disinfecting of the pharmacy’s clean room in accordance with company policy.
  • Assist the pharmacist / quality team in the process of compounding, cleaning and monitoring in the compounding suite
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify and understand the variable compounding modalities. Understand the need to consult with the pharmacist or quality team if questions / concerns arise
  • Accurately label, package and store products prior to shipment to patients
  • Maintain pharmacy and clean room in a clean, organized and well-stocked manner according to SOPs
  • Assist with daily, weekly, monthly Quality Assurance activities including temperature monitoring of product environment and QA testing of compounded batches
  • Document daily compounding statistics and collate daily data for month end reports
  • Generate all daily JIBs, labels and CII logs
  • Assist with inventory management functions involving purchasing and receiving drug shipments as well as computer system inventory maintenance
  • Performs calculations for dosage volumes, unit conversions, admixture volumes, and other required calculations for the preparation and validation of all sterile and non-sterile compounding.
  • Prepares the clean room and sterile products areas for daily use.
  • Prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile compounds timely and accurately while following clean room policies and procedures
  • Prepares intravenous hazardous medication admixtures while following clean room policies and procedures.
  • Complies with Universal Precautions and Aseptic Technique and Handling of Hazardous Chemicals guidelines; wears appropriate personal protective equipment as required
  • Ensures adequate stock of sterile equipment, pharmaceutical equipment, and pharmaceuticals in the pharmacy, medication areas, and automated pharmacy systems.
  • Properly disposes of medications, hazardous substances, sharps, papers with protected health information, and other items within the pharmacy
